Visual adaptation is the key parameter in estimating visibility thresholds in complex images. We model the spatial characteristics of adaptation using psychophysics and a novel model discovery approach. We demonstrate our model in several applications, including perceptual error bounds, backlight resolution, visible dynamic range, afterimages, and gaze-dependent tone mapping.
