DATACOLLIDER: An interface for exploring large spatio-temporal data sets
The increasing use of social media and cell phones or the widespread setup of sensors have resulted in the production of large data sets, both time stamped and geolocated, which are a powerful window on social interactions or city dynamics. Unfortunately, the sheer size of these data sets presents difficulties for their manipulation and understanding. Visualization is often the first step to explore these data sets but the tools dedicated to spatio-temporal data are still scarce. In this paper, we present DATACOLLIDER, a web application which provides a processing engine and new templates for 2D/3D visualization housed in an interface that enables users to quickly interact with large data sets. We demonstrate that the interface can be tailored to leverage distributed computing, data set manipulation and refined visualizations, and may be used by individuals without programming knowledge.
