HapSticks: Tool-mediated Interaction with Grounding-free Haptic Interface

For the transfer of the tool manipulation by a skilled person, the representation of the feelings of manipulating tools through haptic device is useful. Thus, a variety of tool-type haptic devices are studied, but most of these devices need to be grounded or attached to the user's body. In our study, we developed a novel method to represent the virtual forces applied on tools without grounding nor attaching the device. Besides, we developed a chopsticks-shapee haptic device -- HapSticks -- as one of example applications of our method. In this paper, we also demonstrate tool-mediated interaction with the developed virtual environment and our proposed device to consider example applications of HapSticks.
